Technology has revolutionized the concept of capturing live images. The earlier concept of producing permanent photograph was based on pure chemistry. In 1830, Louis Daguerre, devised the first practical way of producing permanent photographs. Today we are talking about the computerized photo imagery in the filmless picture taken by a device that is smart in electronic intelligence and in appearance - digital camera.
A digital camera takes video, still photographs, or both digitally. It records images on a light sensitive sensor. Instead of using a film, an arrangement of charged-coupled devices-light sensitive semiconductors, which stores electrical charges,-does the job. These digital sensors-composed of pixels -transform the light from the scene snapped into an analog signal which is then converted into a digital version. One electronic filtering system regulates color and other picture components. Another system reduces the picture. The image is finally sent to a temporary storage area and ultimately onto a memory card. Many compact digital cameras can record sound, video and still photographs.
The images are transferred to a computer where they can be modified, printed, attached to email, inserted in web pages, etc. The most significant advantages of a digital camera are its memory capacity and ability to screen the images taken on a tiny video monitor.
The technology of the digital camera relates to the same technology of Video Tape Recorder. The first VTR in 1951 captured images from the television by converting the information into electrical impulses (digital) and subsequently saving them onto magnetic tape. It was in 1960s when NASA had made a major breakthrough by converting analog to digital signals by means of the space probe for mapping the surface of the moon. Also digital imaging had its other uses in spy satellites.
Kodak scientists invented the first mega pixel sensor capable of recording 1.4 million pixels. In 1991, Kodak released the first digital camera system- a Nikon F-3 camera equipped with 1.3 megapixels aimed at journalists. The first digital camera for the consumers which worked with a home PC via a serial cable were the Apple Quick Take 100 camera(1994), the Kodak DC40 camera(1995), the Casio QV-11 with LCD monitor(late 1995) and Sony`s Cyber-Shot Digital Still Camera(1996).
The main features of a digital camera can be summarized as follows:
Resolution: Resolution means sharpness of a picture. The higher the number of pixels, the higher is the resolution.
Memory: The pictures are stored like a data file in a digital camera. The size of the memory determines the number of picture which can be taken, stored and downloaded in the computer.
Flash Type: Most digital cameras have a built in flash of a range around 10 -16 feet which is required to provide extra light needed to take photographs in insufficient light.
Optical Zoom: Normally two types of zoom lenses are used viz., digital and optical. The optical zoom lenses serve more purpose like adding detail and sharpness.
Compression: This process helps to reduce the file size.
Lens: The length of a lens determines how much of a scene will fit into a picture.
LCD Screen: A very interesting feature of a digital camera is the LCD screen which permits one to see what the photo will look like before and after taking photographs, leaving room to decide whether to erase or save the photo.
In the market there are several brands of digital camera which are selling successfully and the continuous improvement in Technology is leading way to introduction of more and more exciting features in the digital camera.

Professional photographers know exactly what they’re looking for when they purchase a digital camera. Years of experience and fine tuning digital cameras every day makes the choice clear for them. For the rest of us, a new camera purchase can be a daunting experience. I know when I first got into digital cameras the technology seemed a little intimidating- but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s a short guide with ten things to look for when, as an amateur photographer, you’re ready to replace that antique sitting on the top shelf of the closet.
1. Resolution – When digital cameras first came out, it was all about the megapixels. There was a wide variety of sizes (and prices) available- however, now most of even the smallest digital cameras are 5 megapixels, which is more than adequate for your typical 4×6 vacation photos and the occasional 8×10. The time to go larger is when you want to regularly create larger pictures- or you want to be able to zoom in on areas of specific detail and print those. The compromise you must make for those larger pictures is more space used on your memory card, so if you get a higher megapixel camera, make sure to pick some extra cards.
2. Exposure control – For most amateurs, aperture size and shutter speeds are a mystery. What should I use when? The manufacturers have addressed this with scene preset modes. Picking the correct mode allows you to select the proper settings of, for example, a close-up by simply clicking ‘Macro Mode’ instead of manually configuring the camera. If you’re interested in digital cameras as a hobby, manual configuration options are something you should look for.
3. Zooms –There are two types of zoom available, optical zoom and digital. The one you should really pay attention to is optical zoom- pictures using optical zoom are sharper. Also understand that when the camera is using the higher magnification settings, it will be more vulnerable to shaking, so you may want to pick up a tripod if you’ll be using that zoom most of the time.
4. Size – Take a little time to think about what you’re going to be using your camera for. There’s always a tradeoff between size and functionality- here’s a quick summary:
a. Ultra Compact – small, light pocket sized cameras. Some may have fewer features.
b.Compact- fit in a modest camera case, great for point and shoot pictures.
c. Advanced- more functionality here along with more size. Typically we see buttons for modes as opposed to menus (which saves having to navigate), better zooms, and they also accept accessories (lenses, filters, etc.)
d. Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) – Heavy and large, these offer the best functionality; typically professionals and serious photographers use them.
5. Weight – Hand in hand with size is camera weight. Generally speaking, more features equals more weight, so think carefully about what you really need. A small, light camera with fewer features is a better choice if you want to take it everywhere and get lots of pictures, as opposed to a heavy monster you dread having to lug and only use once in a while.
6. Batteries –Basically batteries come in two formats, proprietary battery packs, and then there are cameras that accept AA batteries. If you get a camera with the proprietary pack, it’s worth it to purchase another one as backup, because invariably you’ll want to take a picture and the battery will die. I recommend getting a camera that allows you to use AA batteries- if you need to buy a set in pinch you can, and you also have the flexibility of buying rechargeables and using them again and again.
7. Speed- When you are ready to purchase, be sure to check out the lag on button press. If you want to photograph things in motion (kids, pets, sports, etc) it can be very frustrating to try to snap that perfect picture and have the image captured 5 seconds later after the moment has passed. Some cameras offer continuous shutter mode, which allows you to snap pictures in sequence. For most amateurs 5 frames per second is adequate.
8. Manual Focus – part of the beauty of digital cameras is most of them take care of focusing for you. In some situations you may want the ability to manually focus to bring out detail.
9. Low Light Modes – Some cameras have auxiliary lights to help focus or even night vision mode. If you’re going to be taking pictures at night, it’s worth the money to add this to your checklist.
10. Accessories- Most people focus exclusively on the camera, and the accessories are an afterthought. Depending on where you buy your camera, you may be able to get a package deal that includes things you would have to buy anyway, like a case, memory cards, extra batteries and the like. If you buy your camera in a camera store don’t be afraid to negotiate, many will give you a better price or throw in extras like photography lessons.
When you buy a digital camera there’s no need to be intimidated, just do some research online and have an idea of what you want to do with your camera, create a list of important points, and then buy with confidence.

Planning to buy a digital camera? Not sure how to get started?
Read on to discover how…..
What do you need the camera for?
If you buy a simple one that can be used at home, you will not get interesting capabilities that you need for taking really good photographic pictures. On the other hand, it would be a waste of your money if you have the latest digital camera only to be used for personal photos at home.
Based on the purpose one can choose from the following main three types.
· Point and shoot: - reasonably compact, with features and size like 35mm cameras.
· Lifestyle: - with moderate features, it’s sleek and compact, so you can carry it around with ease.
· Professional: - with interchangeable lenses, flashes and other accessories, this camera is robust and feature laden, just the right choice for a professional or serious photographer.
These are the important features to look for?
Digital images are made up of dots called pixels. The higher the number of pixels in your image, the better will be the quality of the image. This will therefore enable you to enlarge your image to higher pixel dimensions without creating a pixilated (broken) image.
Compression
Compression shrinks a photo’s file size, thus accommodating more images in the memory card. However compression causes a small amount of data loss. If you need the absolute best-quality images, you have to consider buying a camera that takes uncompressed photos but will accommodate less number of images.
A camera’s memory size will decide the number of images that can be stored. Memory of 128MB will be good enough if you want to use the camera mostly at a social do or a party. If you are on a vacation or when you cannot download images for days at a stretch, a memory of 512MB to 1GB will be most favorable.
Most digital cameras come with at least an optical viewfinder but many digital cameras also come with an LCD screen built into the back. For a digital camera, they vary from 1.5-2.5 inches.
Lens
It is the length of a camera’s lens that determines how much of a scene will fit in a picture. A “Normal” lens is about 50mm, most closely approximate to what your eye sees.
Optical zoom
This enables the photographer to zoom in on an object without any problem in picture quality. Depending on the magnification number, you can zoom in more.
Digital zoom
This feature enables the photographer to zoom in on the centre of the picture by removing the edges of the image.
Focus an exposure
In most cameras, the correct exposure for the lighting conditions is automatically determined. A camera rated ISO 100, has approximately the same light sensitivity as that of a traditional film camera loaded with ISO 100 film. A higher ISO rating means that the camera is more sensitive to light and is potential enough to take pictures in darker settings.
Audio and Movie capture
This feature allows you to record sounds and moving images at the same time, in exactly the same way that a camcorder functions. Some digital cameras provide the facility to record a few seconds of audio with each shot, thus letting you add a personal sound bite to your photos.
Movie mode
This is a feature that lets you take short film clips with your camera. The total record length is typically limited to 10 to 90 seconds.
Most digital cameras come with an in-built flash. Some cameras however include additional features, such as red-eye reduction or night portrait mode.
Image erase
Most cameras also let you select pictures to erase. This handy feature gives you the chance to edit out the photos you don’t want in order to create space in the memory.
Self-timer
A self-timer allows your digital camera for a delayed exposure, usually giving you about 10 seconds before the picture is taken.
Computer connections
Most high-end cameras have software and connections for both Mac and PC computers. However it is necessary to make sure the digital camera you want is compatible with your platform before you buy it.
This feature enables the photographer to capture still images of something moving very fast.
Printing
Nowadays you can buy special printers, depending on the compatibility of your camera, to print off your pictures without connecting it to a PC. This applies both for digital and SLR Professional cameras.
How important is size and portability to you?
Size is another very important factor to consider. If you are to use the camera for non professional purposes the size has to be small as you cannot afford to carry huge sized cameras when you are enjoying a trip.
What is your budget?
Based on the budget the features will vary and the overall offering of a camera. Today’s digital cameras run anywhere from Rs 800 to Rs 30,000, depending on resolution and features. While the initial expense of a digital camera is still high you may find that the added convenience and savings in film and processing costs are worth it.

A photographic camera is an apparatus for taking photographs or moving film. All cameras have the same basic design - a lightproof container with a lens and a light-sensitive surface. A digital camera is different from a standard 35 mm SLR (single lens reflex) in the sense that digital cameras require no film rolls.
In earlier times careful planning went into taking pictures of an object but with a digital camera you can take a number of photographs and then select the best posture that you have captured while the rest of the pictures can always be deleted without involving any monetary loss. The pictures can then be transferred to your personal computer from where you can take out printouts if you have a color printer installed.
The quality of the photographs in a digital camera depends upon the camera resolution which is determined by pixels. Pixels or picture elements are any of the minute areas of uniform illumination of which an image on a digital display screen is composed. The greater the number of these pixels, the sharper is the image created. A digital camera which offers a resolution of 5 mega pixels is normally considered a good camera.
The weight of the digital camera also goes a long way in camera selection. Once upon a time digital cameras used to weigh one kilogram but with technological advancement they have become very compact and sleek. These modern cameras now come with zoom facilities. You can use digital zoom in any picture-taking mode to get up to 3X magnification beyond optical zoom.
You can do more with your digital camera like using different modes. General picture taking offers an excellent balance of image quality and ease of use. Point-and-shoot simplicity function is provided when taking pictures under special conditions. You can capture video with sound. You can view your favorite pictures. To capture far away scenes, the camera uses infinity auto focus. The camera automatically sets the focus distance depending on the zoom position.
Most digital cameras permit a white-balance setting which automatically transmits by inference which element should look white and which should look black. The lens is an integral part of any camera and determines the quality of the photographs. All digital cameras have LCD screens which can vary in size.
Care and maintenance of your digital camera is of utmost importance. If you suspect water has gotten inside the camera, remove the battery and memory card and allow all components to air-dry for at least 24 hours before using the camera. Blow lightly on the lens or LCD to get rid of dirt and dust. You should always wipe softly with a lint-free and soft cloth or lens cleaning tissue. Never use solutions unless intended particularly for camera lenses. Never allow chemicals such as sun tan lotion, to contact painted surfaces.
For digital camera, battery care is vital. Do not allow batteries to touch metal objects, including coins. Otherwise a battery may short circuit, discharge energy, become hot or leak. Always remove the battery when the product is stored for an extended period of time.
If your budget allows always buy a digital camera that provides you with higher resolutions, longer zoom lens and some other special features. Advanced consumer cameras usually require that you spend some time with the instruction manual to master all their capabilities, but they have few limitations.
Digital camera assures a user friendly working with pictures and videos. If accidentally you delete a picture you can use the undo delete function to retrieve it but this should be done immediately after you delete a single picture.

The type of camera with self-developing film is known as instant camera. Polaroid Corporation makes the famous Polaroid cameras.
Based on the type of film used, Polaroid cameras can be classified. The older Polaroids used instant film roll. Roll films were of two types: Positive or developing agent and negative. These rolls were available in three sizes. Pack film was later used in cameras, in which the photographer has to pull the film from the camera for developing and subsequently the positive and the negative have to be peeled separately while developing. This Pack film was available initially in a rectangular format and later in square format. Subsequent Polaroids such as the once famous SX-70 model utilized a square format integral film, which had the developer, negative, fixer etc in the same film. Development of each exposure was automatic once the shot is taken.
That’s the history of Polaroid camera. Polaroid digital cameras are now available in various types. You should be happy to know that there are certain models designed specially for a good cause. The m635P model from Polaroid Corporation was designed solely for promotion of breast cancer research. Polaroid Corporation along with actress Elizabeth Hurley initiated to offer a combined donation of $60,000 for the above Research foundation in the year 2006. Pink, light pink and magenta models of Polaroid digital cameras were launched especially for the above good cause and awareness.
One more noted achievement from Polaroid is the launch of the ION digital camera which combines high-end features and is easy to use. This ION digital camera has an on-board memory of 8MB and is light and compact, suitable for traveling people. Other features of this ION digital camera include automatic white balance with auto exposure, a 10-second electronic timer, the capacity to capture AVI video clips along with audio like a web cam, 640 x 460 pixel resolution, Arc Soft software on DVD, two AAA batteries and a USB cable.
Another great model from Polaroid is PDC 4355, which has glass lenses of high quality for Zoom and normal, 4.2 MP resolutions, 3x Optical Zoom and a fast CCD sensor. This is a good camera for photographers for point and shoot simplicity coupled with great optical performance. In the 3x optical and 4x digital zoom modes, the glass lens system permits for exposures for distances of 15 centimeters to infinity and has three modes for image quality and video clip functions.
This Polaroid digital camera has other features such as macro mode, auto focus, Inbuilt flash having the on, off and red eye and auto modes. The PDC 4355 model has an Inbuilt flash memory of 16 MB to store your video clips and pictures, later expandable up to 256MB with any available Secure Digital card. This camera also supports Print Image Matching feature that has the ability to have the camera and mode settings along with the images recorded.
You can easily upload the images to your computer through an USB cable by using the software ‘Photo Impression 5.0’. This software can launch your desktop automatically, detect any new photos in the camera and permit you to transfer them to your computer at the click of the OK button. This handy camera allows you to take pictures within a few minutes of receiving and is powered by two AA batteries.

With the advancement of the digital camera and the software that is made for them, most pictures look professional from the first click of the camera. But like most things, it is important to understand the “how and why” for higher quality results.
The basics of a digital camera revolve around terms like pixel, pixel count, white balance, sensor, sensitivity, optical zoom, or digital zoom. These improve your understanding of what digital photography is all about, and will help you become a more efficient photographer.
For example, one important term is digital sensor. A typical digital camera may have a digital sensor element that is as big as a small finger nail. Most 5MP digital cameras use a sensor that is 7mm x 5mm in size. This is much smaller than the size of the negative of a 35 mm camera. However, high-end digital cameras have large sensors, and generate superior images. These are important things to know, to see how pictures can be better or worse.
Digital cameras also have sensitivity settings similar to ISO ratings on film. Most digital cameras will have settings for sensitivity equivalent to ISO 100 and ISO 200. Many also have a setting for ISO 400. A few expensive digital SLR cameras with large sensors have settings for ISO 3200 or even for ISO 6400.
Most digital cameras have an optical and a digital zoom. An optical zoom lens works by changing the focal length and magnification while the zoom is being utilized - with the image quality remaining high. Digital zoom works by cropping the image to a smaller size. The cropped image is enlarged to fill the frame, causing a significant loss of quality.
The manufacturers of digital cameras use the term “pixel count” to describe their camera’s image properties. The word pixel originates from “(PIC)ture (EL)ement”- with the use of phonics added for emphasis. It represents a single point in a graphic image - not a dot but an abstract sample that can be reproduced in any size, without a dot or square appearance.
A pixel is important to understand because it is the basic unit of measurement, used to define a digital photograph. The more the number of pixels per square inch, the higher the resolution of a digital picture, increasing its clarity. Some examples would be 2,400 pixels per inch, 640 pixels per line, or spaced 10 pixels apart. Designers, artists, and photographers sometimes interchange the pixel terminology, such as dots per inch (dpi) with pixels per inch (ppi). The dpi is used when it refers to the printer’s resolution for the printing density. Each pixel is made up of three color channels - red, green and blue-and has a numerical value of between 0 and 255.
The pixel count also decides the size of a print in case you want to print photographs. A 3MP camera can provide excellent 4×6 inch prints, while a 4 or 5MP digital camera can deliver high quality 8×10 inch prints. With a digital camera you can pick the white balance to suit the light source. This is meant to ensure that white looks white, and not yellow or blue. Normally, your digital camera will do this automatically. You can also set the white balance yourself for better effects.
Since each pixel generates three bytes of data, a photographer using a 3MP camera will need a storage space of 9 million bytes or 9MB to store a single image. This is a huge amount of space. Camera companies therefore allow for a compression of image using a format called JPEG. This reduces the file size significantly but while doing so a lot of data is lost. To overcome this problem companies have come up with different storage formats. Canon calls it RAW while Nikon calls it NEF. The data loss is less in these formats.
The low end cameras used by beginners can shoot images whose pixel count is one million is categorized as 1 MP or one million pixel camera because the intensity of each pixel is variable, with each pixel having three or four dimensions of variability - such as red, green and blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The high-end cameras used by professionals, can range from 14MP to 22MP with a pixel count as high as 14 million or 22 million per image.
The thing to remember is the higher the resolution, the more realistic the image is, matching closest what the actual image is. So take your time, do some research, and talk to people who know cameras. Otherwise, a lot of money will be spent on something that is barely adequate for what you want.

If you are a photography enthusiast and enjoy taking pictures on a regular basis, it may be time for you to explore what digital cameras have to offer you. While at first, many photographers were content with their film cameras, many professionals are now turning to digital photography.
Whether you are a professional photographer or you just enjoy taking great pictures of your family and friends to document your life, digital cameras can make getting the perfect photograph much easier and cheaper.
Why Go Digital
There are a variety of great reasons to start using a digital camera for your photography needs. First of all you will find that in the long run, purchasing a digital camera will save you a great deal of money.
While the initial cost may scare some potential buyers away, if you tally up the cost of film that you would have to use in a camera that uses film and then the cost of developing pictures that may not even turn out right, you will find that a digital camera will be well worth what you pay.
Digital cameras also help you ensure that you get the perfect shot the first time. No more waiting until you develop the film, only to realize that everyone blinked or Aunt Jenny’s head was cut off. With a digital camera, you can see the results immediately and can retake the picture if needed.
Another benefit is that you will not have to worry about running out of film at the wrong time because, usually, you can shoot over a hundred pictures with a digital camera with the right hardware.
What to Look For
If you are going to purchase a digital camera, you want to be sure that you find a camera that is good quality and suitable for the needs you have. One important factor to consider when you are purchasing a digital camera is the megapixel.
If you want images that are clear, you will want a camera with a higher megapixel. In general, cameras that have between three and five megapixels are good quality, but you may want a camera with five to eight megapixels if you are doing professional photography.
Another consideration, when looking for the perfect digital camera, is the zoom features on the camera. If the camera has no zoom feature at all, you will probably want to consider a different camera.
If you want the very best zoom features, you will select a camera that has optical zoom, which will help you get shots up close that are very distinct and free from distortion. The LCD window is also something you want to consider when purchasing a digital camera. Having a larger LCD will enable you to see the pictures you have taken more easily so you can decide when you need to take a picture again.
No matter what kind of photography you enjoy, making the change to a digital camera will be one that you will not regret. The digital camera is more cost effective and allows you to get perfect pictures all the time. If you want quality pictures at a low cost, consider the benefits that a digital camera has to offer you!
