MELVILLE, NY, AUGUST 9, 2006 - Nikon® (www.nikondigital.com) today introduced the versatile, affordable new 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens, further expanding Nikon’s successful line of DX Nikkor lenses, engineered for use exclusively with Nikon’s DX format digital SLR cameras. Combining brand new technologies with advanced features inherited from Nikon’s venerable D2X professional digital SLR camera, the D200 incorporates more must-have features than any other camera in its class, enabling photographers to capture images in a way once reserved only for professionals.

The D200 promises an extremely satisfying shooting experience, with a winning combination of quality, performance, construction and advanced system features. Employing a newly developed 10.2 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor, the D200 captures images with remarkable resolution and clarity. SMARTER

The D200 embodies a host of intelligent technologies that deliver remarkably precise control and accurate automatic features. Equipped with Nikon’s exclusive 1,005 pixel 3D Color Matrix Metering II, the D200 seamlessly determines ideal exposures even in complex lighting conditions. Capturing scene elements including brightness, contrast and color content with a unique 1,005-pixel RGB-enabled sensor, this advanced system employs further improved algorithms for even better evaluation of large area highlight and shadow detail. The 3D Color Matrix Metering II light metering system also uses an onboard database of detailed exposure information from over 30,000 actual images against which instantaneous real-time comparisons are made as part of determining exposures. Rather than merely looking at light levels, a complex, yet transparent evaluation of overall scene content takes place, ensuring highly accurate exposures, even in challenging lighting conditions.

The 10.2 effective megapixel image sensor on the D200 incorporates a high-speed 4-channel data output and a new Optical Low Pass Filter that significantly reduces any incidence of moir© as well as color fringing and shifting. Furthermore, 4-channel output allows the D200 to inherit the advanced image-processing engine of the Nikon D2x professional digital SLR that combines color-independent preconditioning prior to A/D conversion with advanced digital image processing algorithms to deliver fine color gradations with smooth, consistent transitions. Photographers can take advantage of the D200’s advanced image optimizing functionality that allows them to fine tune image characteristics such as sharpness, tone, color, saturation, and hue. One of the most notable new features of the D200 is its all new 11-area AF system, convertible to a 7-wide area AF system, both based on Nikon’s advanced Multi-Cam 1000 AF Sensor Module. Not only does this AF system support the photographer with fast and precise auto focus under a variety of shooting conditions, but it also offers a pleasing array of functions for greater flexibility - allowing an individual area to be selected from either the 11-area AF or 7-wide area AF sensors for Single AF or making use of multiple sensors to enable Dynamic AF, Closest Subject Priority Dynamic AF and Group Dynamic AF.

Running out of power on the D200 is harder than ever, since in addition to its remarkable capacity of up to 1800 shots per charge, the D200 also features an intelligent power management Fuel Gauge feature that constantly monitors the battery’s precise remaining power in 1% increments. It also displays the total number of shots taken on each charge as well as overall life of the battery, so photographers can easily tell when to replace a battery.

The D200 is a wireless whiz, and features Nikon’s advanced i-TTL wireless Speedlight control built right into the camera, as well as wireless image transfer over a 802.11b/g Wi-Fi network built into the optional WT-3 Wireless Transmitter (available Spring 2006). The camera’s powerful built-in Speedlight, capable of coverage for lenses as wide as 18mm, features a Commander Mode that can wirelessly control up to two separate groups of an unlimited number of i-TTL speedlights such as the SB-800, SB-600 or SB-R200. The Commander Mode in the D200 can adjust flash compensation settings for each of the two groups on the fly, making light output control from speedlights placed in hard to reach locations simple and effortless.

FASTER

The D200 is faster than any other camera in its class, making its handling exceptionally responsive. The D200 can shoot continuously at up to five frames per second, capturing up to an impressive 37 JPEG images** or up to 22 NEF (RAW) images, making it ideal for action, wedding and event photography. Featuring an industry leading power-up time of 0.15 seconds, the D200 is ready to shoot when the photographer is ready. Its reduced shutter release time lag of 50 milliseconds is nearly undetectable and when shooting in its continuous burst mode of five frames per second, its shortened viewfinder blackout time (between each successive shot) of just 105 milliseconds proves especially useful in keeping an eye on a moving subject.

The D200 is designed with long term durability, ruggedness and precision in mind. Built on a magnesium alloy chassis and body cover, the D200 combines light weight with high-level durability and protects performance integrity. It also features an enhanced environmental sealing system that helps protect exterior seams from potentially damaging moisture and dust. The D200’s double-bladed shutter unit is tested to well over 100,000 cycles, ensuring highly reliable performance year after year. The shutter unit also employs a refined mirror balance mechanism that allows the mirror to complete its motion cycle and reach a complete stop with virtually no image degrading mirror bounce.

Refined menus on the D200 offer a streamlined and visually enhanced view of camera setup and custom setting options. 21 Sep 08 Digital Photography Plays a Major Role As Scientists Discover and Document First New African Monkey Species in Over 20 Years

Nikon Digital SLR Camera Captures First-Ever Photographic Holotype of a New Monkey Species

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 20 — For the first time in 20 years, a new species of monkey has been discovered deep in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, and the proof of its scientific validity is a series of photographs captured by internationally acclaimed scientist, Dr. Tim Davenport. Using a digital SLR camera, photographs of the highland mangabey represent the first time ever that a new monkey species has been scientifically identified by just a digital photograph.

Dr. Davenport’s discovery of the highland mangabey will be prominently featured in the next issue of the leading international journal, Science. Because the new species lives 8,000 feet above sea level on the flanks of a volcano, Mt. Rungwe, the rare monkey is almost impossible to spot. The steep terrain, dense and poorly-lit rainforest, as well as the shy nature of the animal, made collecting data extremely difficult. However, by using the latest digital photography technology, Dr. Davenport was able to capture images sharp enough to describe the monkey in detail.

“As part of its ongoing partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society, Nikon Inc is proud of its supportive role in aiding this unprecedented discovery,” said Anna Marie Bakker, General Manager of communications for Nikon Inc. “Dr. Davenport’s conservation work, along with his discovery of the highland mangabey, represents a tremendous accomplishment, and helps the world understand the true impact of digital technology on everything from family photographs to wildlife conservation.”

These images proved to be immensely valuable in the species authentication process. Recently, the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature changed its regulations permitting the ‘holotype’ (the individual animal that sets the standard for any new species) to be a photograph, rather than a specimen, as in the past. One of Dr. Davenport’s photographs, taken with the Nikon D100, is now the holotype for this new monkey species. It is the first photographic holotype of a monkey in Africa, and possibly in the world.

“The discovery of the highland mangabey represents an amazing breakthrough in science, and Nikon played a significant role in it,” said Dr. Tim Davenport, Director of the WCS’ Southern Highlands Conservation Programme (SCHP) in southwest Tanzania. “Without the cutting-edge equipment from Nikon, this discovery would have been extremely difficult to capture and share with the scientific community and the world.”

The highland mangabey is brown, with a head and body length of about three feet. The monkey lives as high as 8,000 feet in Kitulo and on Mt Rungwe, where temperatures often fall below freezing; its long coat is probably an adaptation to the cold. Indeed, the monkey has long been known by native hunters who climb into the mountains to hunt. However, these days it seems that only the older generation are aware of the animal. The highland mangabey is extremely rare and critically endangered, with an estimated total population of between 500 and 1,000 animals. According to Davenport, the Southern Highland forests, including those of Mt. Rungwe and Kitulo, are highly degraded by illegal logging, and without prompt action the animal’s future is uncertain.

Dr. Davenport was born in Manchester, UK and received a BSc and Phd in zoology from the University of Leeds. He has worked in over 70 African forests and has been directly involved in the designation of new national parks on both sides of the continent. Dr. Davenport has written and published almost 100 papers, reports and popular articles on subjects ranging from national conservation priorities to invertebrate biology. He joined WCS and moved to Tanzania in 1999. There he set up and now directs the SHCP which carries out research, community conservation initiatives and protected area design and management in threatened habitats across the region.

Since 1895, the Wildlife Conservation Society has worked from their New York based Bronx Zoo headquarters to save wildlife and wild lands throughout the world. MELVILLE, NY, JANUARY 28, 2005 - Marking another significant advancement in lens design, Nikon® (www.nikondigitalusa.com), the world leader in photography, today introduced the versatile new AF-S DX Nikkor™ 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens, further expanding Nikon’s successful line of DX Nikkor digital-dedicated lenses. Developed to be compatible with all Nikon D-series digital SLR Cameras, the AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens will be included as the standard zoom lens in the recently announced Nikon D70 digital SLR camera Outfit.

The AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED covers a very popular focal length range (equivalent to 27-105mm in 35mm format), and offers a selection of Nikon’s highly regarded technologies such as Silent Wave motor (AF-S) for super fast and quiet autofocus operation, Extra-Low Dispersion glass (ED) for minimized chromatic aberrations, and Internal Focusing (IF) for convenient and balanced handling. In addition, the AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED also incorporates hallmark Nikon features that customers have come to expect from Nikkor lenses, such as distance information guide window, a reliable metal lens mount for years of durability, and a M/A mode for seamless switching between autofocus and manual modes.

Designed exclusively for use with DX Format SLR cameras, DX Nikkor lenses deliver a versatile range of angle-of-view, higher performance, and outstanding center-to-edge-to-corner image quality, while realizing smaller and lighter designs. All DX Nikkor lenses have a picture angle comparable to that of 35mm format lenses with a 1.5x factor. Since the introduction of the DX Nikkor lenses, the series has grown to include four lenses. When used with a Nikon digital SLR camera and Nikon Capture(TM) software, images shot with the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm lens can be transformed into ultra-wide angle rectilinear images with a choice of 100 degrees and 130 degrees horizontal angles of view.

The AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED will be packaged with the newly announced D70 digital SLR camera. The D70 Outfit (including lens) will be available for a suggested retail price of $1999, and an anticipated street price of $1299. Sold separately, the lens will have a suggested retail price of $590. The lens will be available in Spring 2004.

Popular Long Range, Fast Aperture Lens Now Features Nikon’s Renowned Vibration Reduction Technology

MELVILLE, NY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2004 - Nikon (www.nikonusa.com), the world leader in photography, today announced an all-new AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED super-telephoto lens that features Nikon’s remarkable Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. Designed to work seamlessly with Nikon’s digital and film SLR cameras, this new lens offers professional sports and action photographers a high level of quality, precision and performance.

“Nikon shooters will attest that Vibration Reduction technology works more effectively in achieving sharper pictures in low light or shaky conditions than any other existing technology. Now sports and action photographers can reap the benefits of VR in a focal length they most often use. Coupled with the added advantage of Nikon’s new Nano-Crystal AR coat, photographers can expect very sharp, high-contrast images from the new AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens,” said Jerry Grossman, vice president of Marketing, Nikon Inc.

Based on the extremely popular and well received AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED II, the new lens has been upgraded in specifications and performance to fully satisfy professional photographers. The first addition to this fast and powerful lens is the benefit of VR (Vibration Reduction) - an innovation that allows photographers to take high-quality handheld shots indoors and in dark locations at shutter speeds three stops slower without compromising the sharpness of the picture. A choice of two VR modes allows photographers to best match their shooting conditions and further augments the effectiveness of VR performance. Normal mode primarily compensates for camera shake, and includes automatic panning detection as well as automatic tripod detection. Active mode effectively compensates for vibration in situations where it is pronounced and frequent, such as when shooting from a moving vehicle.

Along with the adoption of VR technology, the new lens also offers handy access to a control pad on the side of the barrel for seamless usability. A Focus Mode switch enables instant and easy switching between M/A (Manual-Priority Autofocus) and M (Manual Focus) modes, while a Focus Limiter switch restricts AF-servo movement within a selected shooting distance range. New Focus Preset buttons can instantly recall a preset focal point - a priceless feature when photographers shooting sports need to quickly return focus to a specific location such as a base or a team’s goal.

The AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED also benefits from Nikon’s new Nano-Crystal AR Coat, which demonstrates superior anti-reflective properties to virtually eliminate ghost and flare to provide clear and vivid images when shooting under powerful sunlight or indoors under spotlights.

The features already incorporated in the lens’ predecessor are carried over as well. This includes Nikon’s exclusive SWM (Silent Wave Motor) that combines fast and accurate autofocusing with super-quiet operation, ED glass elements that minimize chromatic aberration, Internal Focusing (IF) for smoother focusing and a better balanced body, as well as a rubber ring on the lens mount that delivers the same level of resistance to dust and drops of water as Nikon’s professional cameras such as the F6 and D2X and D2H.

Compatibility with Nikon’s TC-14EII (1.4x), new TC-17EII (1.7x), and TC-20EII (2.0x) teleconverters extends the flexibility and total reach of the lens to as long as 600mm when mounted on a 35mm film SLR. When mounted on a Nikon digital SLR, photographers can achieve an angle of view equivalent to a 900mm lens.

The AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens is scheduled to be available at authorized Nikon dealers beginning January 2005.
