(www.nikondigital.com) today introduced the new 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor lens, a 4.3x zoom lens that is ideal for telephoto shooting opportunities. Jazz drummer Tony Sweet talks about his love of photography and the passion that drives him
MELVILLE, N.Y., March 8 — Talk to Tony Sweet about photography and before long, the conversation will turn to the subject of jazz. A jazz drummer for 20 years, Tony’s music experience informs everything he does as a photographer. This March, NikonNet will pay tribute to Tony Sweet and his work in its inspiring monthly showcase, “Legends Behind the Lens.”
Tony’s experience in photography is extensive and ranges from shooting for stock, calendars, greeting cards, posters and catalogue sales to authoring fine-art photography books such as Fine Art Nature Photography and Fine Art Flower Photography. Tony is well recognized as an educator and conducts numerous outdoor and nature photography workshops. He’s also a contributor to Shutterbug magazine.

Tony’s striking images are based on one guiding principle: “Every single thing in the picture space either helps or hurts the image; there’s nothing neutral.” He believes that photographers turn imagined images into pictures — seeing things first in their mind and bringing them to existence by hitting the shutter. “When you’re playing music, when you’re really in the moment, you’re reacting instantly and totally to what’s going on,” he says. “You’re almost pre-hearing where someone is going, and you’re there. You can’t be thinking about technique; the moment you think about it, it’s too late. It’s the same thing in photography. The only way to achieve what you want in photography is to master your craft and then just forget about it. You shouldn’t be thinking of how to get what you want; you’re just out there doing it.”
Tony believes the ideal is to photograph without thinking about technique. While many photographers start out doing a lot of thinking and scanning their surroundings for reference points and scenes they are familiar with, Tony feels that a photographer grows and becomes more spontaneous once they empty their minds and react to what exists around them.
While conducting his workshops and seminars, Tony tells his outdoor and nature photography workshop students that they’ll know they’re getting better by the number of frames they’re hooting — and the number they’re keeping. He feels that the better you are, the fewer frames you shoot.
Tony can chart his own progress by that formula, and by the fact that he’s simplified his images and made them ever more elegant and direct. It was a process he didn’t have to think about because it was identical to the music process. He also says that the players he most admires are the most lyrical. “What hit me was how clear and direct they were, how simple, in fact. Not in technique, but in their expression and communication.”

Capture NX, the next generation of Nikon’s popular Capture software, inherits the robust RAW (NEF) processing capabilities from Nikon Capture 4.4, and combines these with brand new features such as Nik Software, Inc.’s revolutionary, patented U Point™ technology, seamless image-browsing and advanced batch-processing capabilities, superior color management control and comprehensive system compatibility with Nikon’s Digital Imaging System. Capture NX’s intuitive interface design offers photographers a rewarding experience and delivers powerful performance while maintaining an ease-of-use that is welcomed by enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Exclusive New U Point Technology
Nikon Capture NX’s exclusive U Point technology is revolutionary in its approach to enable edits to portions of an image, or an entire image, without requiring the photographer to manually outline or mask the editable area. U Point technology achieves this by using “Control Points” - simple, interactive points that can be placed anywhere in an image and can be instructed to affect very specific characteristics of the image. For example, if a photographer wanted to enhance the tone of a certain color that appears in an image, without adversely affecting the neighboring portions of the image, he or she can do so by simply placing a control point on the color and defining the enhancement, which can be reflected locally or globally. Enhancements can be instantly adjusted, canceled or added with ease, without compromising the original quality of the image. Control Points powered by U Point technology are perfectly compatible with the NEF file’s Instruction Set structure. Control Points include Color Control Points, Black, White, and Neutral Control Points and Red-Eye Reduction Control Points.
Capture NX software is further complemented by a suite of features and tools that include the following:
- Sophisticated Edit List: A master control list of Capture NX features and enhancements. Anything that affects an image will have an Edit List entry. Entries can be removed, altered, or duplicated from this list without any destructive effects on the integrity of an image.
- Expanded Power of the NEF file format: Capture NX further extends the NEF file format by incorporating U Point technology, giving users the ability to save and undo the effects of Control Points on an NEF image at any time. JPEG and TIFF images saved in the NEF file format can also take advantage of this feature.
- Powerful Image Browser: Capture NX’s Browser is capable of labeling, sorting and editing, all while browsing images. - Exclusive Nikon Capture Features: Capture NX inherits powerful functions from Capture 4.4 software, including Color Aberration Control, D-Lighting, Image Dust-Off, Vignette Control and Fisheye-to-Rectilinear Image Transformation. A new Distortion Control has been added to help control pincushion and barrel distortion effects.

The 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor features Nikon’s enhanced Vibration Reduction System (VR II) which substantially improves high-quality hand held close-up shooting. The VR II function minimizes the negative effects of camera shake by offering users the ability to take pictures at shutter speeds as many as 4 stops slower* than would otherwise be possible, without the image degrading blur associated with slow shutter speeds. Nikon’s VR technology further enhances picture taking potential with a choice of two modes to match most shooting conditions. VR Normal Mode primarily compensates for camera shake, and includes automatic panning detection, as well as automatic tripod detection. 21 Sep 08 NikonNet and ‘Legends Behind the Lens’ Pay Tribute to Joel Sartore This January
MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 4 — In order to make a change, one must shed light on the issue at hand. This is the method used by Joel Sartore in his environmental photography. His work has been an influential force in creating awareness about the environment and the importance of protecting our natural surroundings. In celebration of his unique approach and remarkable dedication, NikonNet will honor Joel Sartore for the month of January in its inspiring monthly showcase, “Legends Behind the Lens.”
For over 15 years, Sartore has photographed wildlife and the environment for National Geographic and other publications. Convincing people that there is a tangible, measurable and practical benefit to preserving the land and its inhabitants is, Sartore believes, the key to saving the wild places and the species that live there. Sartore realizes that a hopeful message is vital.
“You can’t get anyone to want to change the earth for the better if you’re negative,” he explains. Sartore remembers hearing a powerful piece of advice from the former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani: “One of the things he said was that no one will do anything, take any action, if all you’re telling them is that things are bad and there’s no hope. If you’re trying to lead, you have to find a positive message. That opened my eyes. People want to have reasons for hope. Hope is what motivates them.” Sartore believes that change will come, but it is going to take time. “A camera is a great way to give a voice to the voiceless,” Sartore remarks. “It’s a way of showing people what’s at stake.”
Sartore did not set out to be an environmental photographer or, for that matter, work for National Geographic, for whom he is a contributing photographer. His degree from the University of Nebraska is in journalism, and he was a newspaper photographer for several years, handling general assignment work. It was the result of meeting National Geographic photographer James Stanfield that led Joel to send his portfolio to the magazine. At first his work with National Geographic was along the lines of Americana profiles. He worked his way into nature stories when he saw “the environmental destruction that was going on.” In addition to National Geographic, Sartore has been published in Time, Life, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.
“Joel Sartore has a clear passion for his work,” notes Anna Marie Bakker, Director of Communications at Nikon Inc. “He has provided his audience with a unique view of the environment through photography and Nikon is pleased to honor him for the month of January.”
The introduction of the Nikon D2X marked Sartore’s move to digital.
