MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 17 — In the field of advertising photography, it is widely known that photographers must adapt to the changing times. Al Satterwhite chooses to make adjustments while staying true to his own vision through his sense of composition and bold use of color. It is for this reason that NikonNet’s inspiring monthly showcase, “Legends Behind the Lens” will honor his work this November. Satterwhite is an esteemed advertising photographer who works with both still photography and film.
Satterwhite has had a busy career. While still in high school he shot for the St Petersburg Times, then moved on to ten years of freelance magazine work, shooting assignments for Fortune, Car & Driver, Life, Time, Newsweek, People, Sports Illustrated and Travel & Leisure, among other top magazines. In 1980, he began a 15-year run of national and international advertising photography. His clients included American Express, Kodak, Porsche, Saab, Coca Cola and Nikon. He also found time to lecture, conduct workshops, work on book projects, including A Day in the Life of Spain, Lights! Camera! Advertising! and Satterwhite on Color & Design.

Currently, Satterwhite is doing both still and film work. Film, he says, provides him with a new appreciation for still photography. “Film is about images serving a story, telling the story; it’s not necessarily about the image itself,” states Satterwhite. “But with stills it’s usually the other way around. You usually have one picture, and you have to get the story crammed into that one picture, and it has to stand out. So it’s all about the technique you use for that one picture.”
It is this thought that brings him back to the thoughts of styles, trends and the nature of commercial photography. Regarding his work, Satterwhite comments, “Basically I like what I do, and I’ve pretty much kept on doing it. With advertising photography you can go out of style, and later you get rediscovered and people go, oh, it’s new and exciting. Well, it’s the same vision I’ve had for a long time with maybe a little twist.”
Today, Satterwhite’s tools for composites are likely to include a D2X digital SLR camera, an F5 film SLR camera, and a COOLSCAN 9000 to digitize new and older slides. Among his favorite Nikkor lenses are the 28mm f/1.4D AF, 55mm f/2.8 Micro, 85mm f/1.4D IF AF, 135mm f/2D AF, 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF and the 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S. SMARTER
The D200 embodies a host of intelligent technologies that deliver remarkably precise control and accurate automatic features. Equipped with Nikon’s exclusive 1,005 pixel 3D Color Matrix Metering II, the D200 seamlessly determines ideal exposures even in complex lighting conditions. Capturing scene elements including brightness, contrast and color content with a unique 1,005-pixel RGB-enabled sensor, this advanced system employs further improved algorithms for even better evaluation of large area highlight and shadow detail. The 3D Color Matrix Metering II light metering system also uses an onboard database of detailed exposure information from over 30,000 actual images against which instantaneous real-time comparisons are made as part of determining exposures. Rather than merely looking at light levels, a complex, yet transparent evaluation of overall scene content takes place, ensuring highly accurate exposures, even in challenging lighting conditions.
The 10.2 effective megapixel image sensor on the D200 incorporates a high-speed 4-channel data output and a new Optical Low Pass Filter that significantly reduces any incidence of moir© as well as color fringing and shifting. Running out of power on the D200 is harder than ever, since in addition to its remarkable capacity of up to 1800 shots per charge, the D200 also features an intelligent power management Fuel Gauge feature that constantly monitors the battery’s precise remaining power in 1% increments. He’ll tell you that photographing weddings is a lot like photographing sports. “They’re both about anticipation, action and reaction. If someone gives a toast, there will be a reaction. If someone tells a joke, I’m looking for where the laughter is going to come from.” Like a sports photographer, Solano often works from a distance using long lenses. “My whole thing is to be unobtrusive, to really not be seen,” he says. “The biggest compliment I can get is someone saying, ‘I didn’t even know you were there.’”
What he’s looking for are the pure moments when things happen, and when the key people at the wedding react to what’s happening. In his opinion, that preparation begins long before the wedding day, when he meets the couple and establishes a chemistry with them to understand what they are looking for in their photographs.

Designed for photojournalists and sports/action photographers, D2Hs integrates the best technologies from its predecessors with an array of exclusive new innovations that deliver the speed, response and handling required for action photography.
The range of new features and enhancements in the D2Hs are based on extensive research and feedback from professional photographers around the world. An all-new image processing engine in the camera produces images with higher quality, finer gradations and lower noise, while a newly refined exposure metering system improves on Nikon’s hallmark 3D Color Matrix technology. The D2Hs Auto White Balance and auto focusing systems have been fine tuned to deliver precise, accurate results and an enhanced buffer now offers continuous shooting at 8 frames per second for up to 50 consecutive shots (JPEG, FINE).

- Advanced new image processing engine produces high quality images
The new image processing engine adopts advances from the D2X to further improve overall image quality in the D2Hs, producing images with finer gradations, lower noise and consistent, smooth transitions.
- High-speed continuous shooting at 8 fps for up to 50 consecutive shots
The speed achieved by the LBCAST sensor and the camera’s image processing allows the D2Hs to shoot continuously at 8 frames per second for up to 50 consecutive JPEG or 40 RAW (NEF) shots.
- 3D-Color Matrix Metering II
Refinements to Nikon’s hallmark 3D Color Matrix exposure metering system in the D2Hs result in optimal exposure calculations from the data supplied by the 1,005-pixel RGB Exposure/Color Matrix Metering Sensor, even when shooting under challenging conditions.
- Precise white balance
The D2Hs uses refined Auto White Balance (AWB) and Auto Tone Control (ATC) systems to deliver precise white balance settings when shooting in tricky or mixed lighting situations.
- Faster, higher precision 11-area AF system
Refinements to the camera’s AF and lens drive algorithms further improve focus precision, subject acquisition, and subject tracking. The high precision and speed of the D2Hs’ AF system also contributes to achieving high-speed continuous shooting.
- High-speed wireless data transfer and camera control
The D2Hs is compatible with the Wireless Transmitter WT-1/1A as well as the new Wireless Transmitter WT-2/2A, which supports both IEEE 802.11g (for faster transfer speeds) as well as IEEE 802.11b networks. The WT-2/2A also strengthens wireless security options and supports a wider variety of network protocols, including the new PTP/IP protocol that realizes wireless Capture Control from a computer running Nikon Capture 4 (Ver. 4.2.1 or later).
- sYCC color space support
Added support for sYCC color space produces JPEG files that can fully exploit the output capabilities of the latest color printers and use a gamut wider than sRGB to achieve optimum print quality.
- GPS connectivity expands applications
The latitude, longitude, altitude and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) at which a shot is taken can be recorded from a GPS unit to the image’s metadata. GPS units that comply with the NMEA 0183 (ver.2.01) interface standard can be connected using the optional GPS cable (MC-35).
- High-resolution 2.5″ LCD
A new large 2.5-inch LCD monitor with a higher resolution of 232,000 pixels adds an all-digital interface for clear, flicker-free display of images and information. Displays include preview images at up to 15x magnification, an improved histogram display, and new selectable RGB histogram displays, making exposure confirmation quick, easy and accurate for each of the red, green and blue color channels. Other useful displays include the World Time function and the chronological Recent Settings list.
The D2Hs comes with PictureProject, an easy-to-use software application for managing, editing and sharing image files. The D2Hs is also compatible with Nikon’s optional Nikon Capture software package that delivers a unique, powerful and expandable environment for full control over RAW(NEF) files. Designed exclusively for use with DX Format SLR cameras, DX Nikkor lenses deliver a versatile range of angle-of-view, higher performance, and outstanding center-to-edge-to-corner image quality, while realizing smaller and lighter designs. All DX Nikkor lenses have a picture angle comparable to that of 35mm format lenses with a 1.5x factor. Since the introduction of the DX Nikkor lenses, the series has grown to include four lenses. * AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 IF-ED: 76 degrees - 22 degrees

When used with a Nikon digital SLR camera and Nikon Capture(TM) software, images shot with the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm lens can be transformed into ultra-wide angle rectilinear images with a choice of 100 degrees and 130 degrees horizontal angles of view.
The AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED will be packaged with the newly announced D70 digital SLR camera. The D70 Outfit (including lens) will be available for a suggested retail price of $1999, and an anticipated street price of $1299. Sold separately, the lens will have a suggested retail price of $590. The lens will be available in Spring 2004.
